Symphony No. 6 “Pathetique”

Pathetique of Mengelberg, the four types of recording has been left. (1923 years as one)

April 19, 1923 the second movement only New York Philharmonic
April 23, 1923 4th movement only New York Philharmonic
December 21, 1937 Amsterdam Concertgebouw
April 22, 1941 Amsterdam Concertgebouw
January 20, 1944 the grand Orchestra of Radio-Paris

Since Mengelberg performanced 97 times the Pathetique, it will be eagerly awaited the discovering of the unknown recording.

In fact, Mengelberg recorded the “Pathetique” in Germany Telefunken company in April 3 to 4, 1937. It is said that remains to Telefunken’s record (Matrix number: 022100 to 022109). However, the recording will not be released, recording master is whereabouts unknown.

Suprising new facts of Mengelberg “Pathetique” one after another, obviously!

In before World War II (SP record era), the performance of the “Pathetique” of Mengelberg and Furtwängler had bisected the popularity. That is the performance of 1937.

But current CD, which is the 1937 recording, has become a different thing using the sound source of the part in 1941.

Truly to listen to the performance of 1937, only CD that was directly republished from the original SP record. (Master has been lost due to W.W.II)

Also playing that has been re-recording of 1941, by the W.W.II, its performance was not heard widely, and important master disc seems to have accidentally destroyed by war damage.

In post-war, published CD as 1941  was bad quality copy from the SP.

In addition, the recording in 1937, and in 1941, it seemed in the studio recording had been a specified time (tempo) performance from recording engineer of record company! To listen to the performance of the intended tempo of Mengelberg, there is only listen to the live recording in 1944.

However, live recordings of 1944, even though that were intended for broadcast, is the worst state of preservation, the state of the sound was something poor…

The “Pathetique” of Mengelberg is said to be great,
But the really great performance of “Pathetique” of Mengelberg is not exist so far!
